Legendary Entertainment has successfully initiated the remake of the notorious 1978 hit film ‘Faces of Death.’ This intriguing development takes the project a significant step forward as it receives an R rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. The film in question is known for its strong bloody violence, gore, sexual content, nudity, language, and drug use.

A New Spin on the Original

‘Faces of Death,’ the original film, followed a pathologist’s journey investigating diverse and gruesome manner of death through footage gathered worldwide. Despite the staged nature of the death scenes in the movie, it incited outrage and revulsion leading to bans and, more intriguingly, attracting a massive audience. This strategy turned the film into a monumental hit that subsequently spawned numerous sequels and copies. Authored and directed by the talented John Alan Schwartz, he cleverly adopted pseudonyms for different crew positions on the set.

Fast-forward to the present, and the new version has employed a fresh pair of visionary minds. The duo encompasses writer Isa Mazzei and director Daniel Goldhaber, renowned for their Netflix release ‘Cam.’ They are all set to work their magic for Legendary Entertainment and Angry Films.

Reimagining the ‘Faces of Death’ Narrative

Reflecting on their approach to the iconic film, Mazzei and Goldhaber revealed, “Faces of Death was one of the first viral video tapes, illuminating the exploration of cycles of violence and its perpetuation online.” The modern storyline is said to revolve around a female online content moderator recovering from a significant trauma. As she starts encountering disturbing videos mirroring the original film’s murders, a crucial question sets the stage: Are these murders real or fabricated?

In a recent interview with Collider, actress Barbie Ferreira shared insights into the film, describing it as spooky, scary, and gruesomely entertaining. She further clarified that while the remake maintains the essence of the cult classic, it does not recreate it frame-for-frame. Rather, it offers a refreshing take on the theme with an interesting narrative set in the digital age of online misinformation.

The Production Team

Along with Legendary Entertainment, the Faces of Death remake is being produced by Angry Films’ Don Murphy and Susan Montford with Divide/Conquer’s Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath. Rick Benattar and Cory Kaplan have stepped in as executive producer and co-producer, respectively. This renewed attempt to remake Faces of Death comes after Murphy and Montford first expressed their intention to reimagine the movie back in 2006.

With no release date announced yet, the ‘Faces of Death’ remake takes an imminent step forward. Join us in following how this film unfolds as it reimagines a cult classic in a contemporary light.
