Here’s the New Facebook Scam That You Need to Know

Date:

How to protect yourself from the new Facebook clone scam.

A new scam has hit your favorite social networking website. According to reports, a Facebook scam has gone viral and it all start’s with a friend’s request. How it works: Scammers use Facebook pictures and information from a legitimate page to create a clone page. The scammer then connects with that person’s friends and tries to get money or information for identity theft. Apparently, scammers are using your friends for money and personal information.

“My friends were saying, ‘Hey, somebody created a fake Facebook profile of you with your picture,’” Paredes said.

He said the imposter sent friend requests to his Facebook friends and started sending them messages.

“One of my friends said they were also asking for money,” said Paredes.

So how do you protect yourself from identity theft on Facebook? Do not accept a friend request someone you do not know on Facebook. According to Fox 5 Atlanta, “If you want to see if your profile has been cloned, save your profile picture on your computer and then go to Google Images. Hit “search by image” and upload the photo to see all the web pages associated with the photo.”

Hackers and scammers are quickly taking over the Internet. Recently, Facebook and Google’s CEOs were both hacked and their social media accounts were taken over by hackers to exploit their weak passwords. It’s sad to think that a place where you would traditionally connect with friends is now littered with people solely interested in stealing your identity.
