Anthony Mackie on Moving Back to New Orleans: Finding Peace and Career Growth

Date:

Takeaways:

  • Anthony Mackie left Hollywood for New Orleans to gain peace of mind and a stronger connection to his roots.
  • The move impacted his career but enhanced his ability to bring authenticity to his roles.
  • Mackie continues to work on major projects, including Captain America: Brave New World and Twisted Metal, while staying close to home.
  • His passion for New Orleans extends to his work ethic and care for those on set.

Anthony Mackie’s Journey Back to His Roots

Anthony Mackie, best known as the MCU’s new Captain America, made a bold decision in 2008: he left Hollywood and returned to his hometown of New Orleans. In an interview with Esquire, the 46-year-old actor opened up about why he made the move and how it has shaped his career and personal life.

“I realized I wanted to move back after a day of fishing with friends and golfing with my uncle,” Mackie shared. The shift gave him a newfound sense of peace and confidence, allowing him to bring a more natural humanity into his performances.

Balancing Career and Personal Life

While moving away from Hollywood slowed his career initially, Mackie found that stepping outside the industry’s fast pace gave him a clearer perspective on his craft. His decision didn’t mean stepping away from acting, though—he has continued to land major roles while living in New Orleans.

Some of his recent projects, like Netflix’s We Have a Ghost and Peacock’s Twisted Metal, were filmed in his hometown, allowing him to merge his love for acting with his deep connection to the city.

A Passion for New Orleans On and Off Set

Mackie’s love for New Orleans isn’t just about personal peace—it’s evident in his work ethic on set. His Twisted Metal co-star, Stephanie Beatriz, praised his leadership and attentiveness to the crew.

“Anthony is a real caretaker on set,” Beatriz told Esquire. “He constantly checks in on the crew. It’s something I’ve seen industry veterans do—Ted Danson, Andre Gower—and Anthony embodies that same level of care.”

Keeping His Family Life Private

In addition to seeking peace in his career, Mackie prioritizes a normal upbringing for his four sons, whom he shares with his ex-wife, Sheletta Chapital. Unlike many celebrities, he keeps his personal life strictly separate from his professional one.

“I don’t allow people to photograph my kids or bring them into my work environment,” Mackie explained. “I want them to have a normal life.”

What’s Next for Anthony Mackie?

Despite living away from Hollywood, Mackie remains a dominant force in the entertainment industry. His upcoming projects include Captain America: Brave New World, where he reprises his role as Sam Wilson, and several other high-profile productions.

His journey proves that success in the entertainment industry isn’t limited to Hollywood—sometimes, home is where the real growth happens.
