STUDY: Men Eat More Pizza When Eating With Women

Date:

According to a research study at Cornell University, men eat nearly twice as much pizza when they are trying to impress a woman.

The study, found that men ate more 93% pizza and salad when eating with a woman than with another man.

The Cornell researchers wanted to understand the relationship between “problematic eating by men” and sexual selection. In the introduction of the study, the group writes:

“When one recognizes the overwhelming presence of men in competitive eating contests where the goal is to consume as much as possible in as short a period as possible, then it becomes clear that male eating patterns warrant closer attention through the lens of sexual selection theory.”

The study was later published in the journal of Evolutionary Psychological Science.

In order to test out their theory, the team watched what 133 adults ate at a “fixed priced ‘all you can eat’ pizza restaurant. it was there they observed that men eating with women ate more.

The study’s lead author, Kevin Kniffin, said that the findings “suggest that men tend to overeat to show off.” The study argues that food consumption is directly linked to showing off. Therefore, by over eating, men are showing that “they possess extraordinary skills, advantages, and/or surplus energy in degrees that are superior to other men.”

Meanwhile, the study found that women felt “rushed” when they ate with men and did not over eat or under eat while eating with men.
