On July 9, more than 23 years after the original movie hit theaters, it was announced that a new installment featuring our favorite ogres (and, of course, Donkey!) is set to be released in 2026. Can we book our tickets already?
If you're just as thrilled as we are to return to the swamp, here's everything you need to know about the new Shrek movie.
When Was Shrek 5 Confirmed?
On July 9, 2024, DreamWorks confirmed that a fifth Shrek movie is in the works, aptly titled Shrek 5. The announcement was made on the official DreamWorks social media account, stating, “Not too Far, Far Away… @Shrek 5 is coming to theatres on July 1, 2026, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz.”
However, the news was initially teased by Eddie Murphy (the voice of Donkey) earlier this year. In June, Murphy told Collider that he had already recorded his part for the new film and mentioned a Donkey spinoff movie.
“We started doing Shrek 4 or [Shrek] 5 months ago. I recorded the first act, and we'll finish it up this year. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey's gonna have his own movie. We're gonna do a Shrek, and we're doing a Donkey [movie],” he explained.
Two new Shrek universe movies? We couldn't be more excited.
Who Is in the Cast?
The excitement doesn't stop there. All three original cast members—Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz—are confirmed to reprise their roles as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona, respectively.
As for Antonio Banderas, it hasn't been confirmed whether he will return as Puss in Boots, but we're keeping our fingers crossed!
What Will the Movie Be About?
The last Shrek movie, Shrek Forever After, released in 2010, saw Shrek living in domestic bliss with Fiona and their triplets. However, he was tricked into signing a pact with the evil Rumpelstiltskin, trading a day from his childhood for a day as a real ogre.
Shrek unknowingly signs away the day he was born, spending much of the movie in an alternate universe where he never existed. A kiss from Fiona ultimately saves the day, turning everything back to normal and making Shrek realize how happy he is with his ordinary life.
Given this conclusion, it's hard to predict the direction of the new film since no plot details have been revealed yet. Will the triplets be grown up? Will Shrek and Fiona be grandparents? We'll have to wait and see!
