Paul Schrader’s The Basics of Philosophy: A New Chapter in Thought-Provoking Cinema

Acclaimed filmmaker Paul Schrader, known for his cerebral and morally intense narratives, has announced a compelling new project titled The Basics of Philosophy. Slated for production under Redline Entertainment and Idle Thoughts Inc., the film is expected to shoot between June 25 and July 19, 2025.

According to Schrader, this upcoming feature will center on an intellectual university philosophy professor, delving into themes of existential inquiry and moral reckoning—territory familiar to fans of his recent trilogy.

A Continuation of Schrader’s Signature Style

Schrader described The Basics of Philosophy as stylistically akin to his most recent and celebrated films: First Reformed (2017), The Card Counter (2021), and Master Gardener (2022). Each of these films explores troubled protagonists grappling with inner demons and societal decay, often through minimalist aesthetics and intense character studies.

With this new film, viewers can expect a similarly introspective journey, where academic intellect collides with philosophical dilemmas.

What to Expect from The Basics of Philosophy

While the screenplay is currently in development, Schrader has completed a detailed outline and plans to write the full script over the next few months. The project emerges during a busy time for the director, who is simultaneously preparing another film, Non Compos Mentis, for production later this year.

No casting announcements have been made yet for The Basics of Philosophy, but the project’s thematic ambition and Schrader’s involvement are sure to attract top-tier talent.

A Quick Look at Non Compos Mentis

In tandem with this announcement, Schrader also provided updates on his other upcoming feature, Non Compos Mentis — a noir centered around sexual obsession and familial dysfunction. Set to begin filming in New York this November, the film features an ensemble cast with roles including two brothers, their mentally unstable mother, a young woman they both fall for, and their respective wives.

Budgeted between $5 million and $6 million, Schrader noted that the project is financed largely through private funding, allowing him full creative control, including final cut privileges.

Schrader on the Industry Today

During a conversation at the Sarajevo Film Festival, where he currently serves as jury president, Schrader reflected on the evolving film industry. He noted how digital tools have lowered barriers to entry—“You can make a movie for $15,000”—but at the same time, it’s increasingly difficult for creators to make a sustainable living.

Despite these challenges, Schrader remains a beacon for independent auteurs, pushing forward with projects that challenge conventions and explore the human condition with unflinching honesty.
