The Simpsons is an animated sitcom created by Matt Groening for Fox. The series is a parody of a middle class American lifestyle. The parody is emphasized with the family, Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie. The show is set in the fictional city of Springfield. The show was created by Groening quickly after a pitch for a series of animated cartoons. Groening named the characters after members of his own family, except for Bart. The shorts became part of The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987. After three seasons as a short sketch, it was developed into a full thirty minute prime time show, and was a quick and early hit for Fox, becoming the network’s first series to land in the top 30 ratings.
Since The Simpsons started in 1989 there have been 508 episodes and has had twenty three seasons. Currently, the simpsons is the longet running American sitcom, and the longest running animated program. Furthermore, The Simpsons movie grossed over $527 million. The Simpsons has won several Emmy Awards, Annie Awards and a Peabody Award and Time named it the 20th century best television series.
