Oliver Stone Relieved Marlon Brando Rejected Role in JFK

Date:

Key Takeaways:

• Notably revered actor Marlon Brando once got a proposition for a key part in Oliver Stone’s film JFK but turned it down.
• Instead of disappointment, Stone expressed relief over Brando’s decision.
• The director preferred Donald Sutherland’s succinct style for the role, fearing Brando’s flair for dramatics could lengthen scenes and alter the film’s dynamic.
• Stars such as Harrison Ford and Mel Gibson also passed on the opportunity to participate in JFK.

Oliver Stone’s Fateful Choice: Brando or Sutherland

Considered one of the most controversial films in American history, JFK, directed by Oliver Stone in 1991, focuses on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The film heightened the controversies surrounding the event and triggered a new wave of debates. According to IndieWire, Marlon Brando, a legend in Hollywood, was initially offered a pivotal role in the movie.

Stone candidly confessed, “I had been dumb enough to go to Marlon Brando.” The role, later portrayed by Donald Sutherland, earned critical acclaim for its depiction of Mr. X, a cloak-and-dagger operative who liaised with the character played by Kevin Costner, Jim Garrison. Stone revealed that although Brando was his first choice, he subsequently regretted the decision.

When Brando’s Dramatics Were Too Much for a Film

Known for his dynamic acting style, Brando had a knack for adding depth to his characters. Stone, however, feared this might complicate things in JFK, causing scenes to run longer than planned. Hence, when Brando rejected the role, Stone was, surprisingly, glad.

“We all love him, of course. But if he’d said yes, I would have been f*cked. That scene would have gone on for twice the length,” Stone noted, referring to Brando’s role.

Stone believed that Brando’s involvement could have been a risky move. The legendary actor’s presence could have pushed Costner to alter his own performance, potentially affecting the entirety of the movie. Stone was convinced the film was already perfect without Brando.

Other Stars Hesitant to Play Mr. X

Interestingly, Brando wasn’t the only one to pass on playing Mr. X. Harrison Ford and Mel Gibson were also considered for the role. However, Ford declined, fearing the risk associated with the character. These fears were echoed by Stone, who acknowledged, “There’s a risk once you play that role.”

Despite the fear and controversy that surrounded it, JFK stands as a landmark film and is now available for streaming on Prime Video. Brando’s missed casting opportunity in JFK offers a unique look into the casting process and the considerations taken by directors during the creation of such iconic films.

Even though Stone revered Brando as an actor, he knew the value of placing the right person in the right role. In this case, a decision that may have initially seemed disappointing turned into a major relief. It reminds us that sometimes, it’s not about the biggest names or the most famous faces but about the most suitable fit for the character.
