Movie Review: ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’

Date:

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a great example of great story telling, amazing computer graphics, and an amazing media strategy.

However, the movie is filled with cross-platform commercials, and cliche story lines making it is easy to get distracted and detached from what is appearing on screen.

That being said, it is easy to believe that each part of the movie was carefully calculated from the cinematography to the screenwriting. Producers took their time to create not just a movie but a feature film.

The cast was amazing, from Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone down to Jamie Foxx and Paul Giamatti. Each cast member truly embraced their role in a comic book movie and were comfortable on screen as heroes, and super villains. But, with the selection of Paul Giamatti it becomes apparent that for big budget feature films, you don’t need a Russian actor to be a Russian super-villain, just cast an Oscar nominated actor.

The filmmaking was terrific. The director Marc Webb definitely had a vision when he ventured into the sequel to The Amazing Spider Man. As an audience member you definitely feel a part of the adventure. The movie features slow motion scenes coupled with action wide shots and bullet-time effects, the movie becomes more and more of a roller coaster ride at Universal Studios than a $5 dollar movie screening.

But, there is an underlying tone of no creativity by the screenwriters. There are benefits to creating an outline when producers are seeking to make a film. It allows you to create a story. But, throughout the movie it seems extremely obvious that screenwriters were trying to fill an outline. Watching the movie it feels as though screenwriters were forced to hit unclear points to make logical connections rather than letting a story flow. It’s as though the creativity is demonstrated in the cast members and directors and not in the screenwriting. The movie is enamored with creating cliche moments and preparing the tone for another Spiderman sequel.

At the end of the day, The Amazing Spider-Man is a product and Sony has a plan on running the train as fast and as hard as they can. With sequels, there is less time for creativity and production. But,  considering all of the pressure to produce an amazing film, they did just that. The Amazing Spider-man is a movie that both kids, teens, adults and families can enjoy.

The story is simple, romantic, heartfelt, and the entire crew does an amazing job of getting you involved in a young-man’s life as he tries to balance saving New York City and those around him.
