The Walking Dead ratings have been cut in half.
Sunday’s Season 9 premiere of the hit AMC drama had 6.1 million total viewers, with 3.2 million of those coming from the 18 to 49 demographic. That is down 23% from Season 8 finale and 27 in the key demographic.
Worse yet, the demographic is less than half the 6.5 million that watched the show “live” to see the Season 8 premiere. Last year’s premiere had 11.4 million total viewers, according to Nielsen’s Live Same Day ratings. Sadly, the show’s October 2017 start was already down 35% in comparison to 2016.
That said, The Walking Dead season 9 premiere was popular enough to make it the number 1 cable show this season among the key demographics for the seventh year in a row.
Sunday’s episode brought in enough viewers of the all-important age range to make it number 2 for this 2018-2019 season, sitting behind NBC’s This Is Us. But, it is important to note that nearly all of TV’s top TV shows are down double digits every year, which is a new disappointing trend for TV viewership.
