In an interview with EBONY, Martin Lawrence squashed rumors and speculation about the future of the Bad Boys franchise, claiming, “We’ve got at least one more.” Following the award ceremony incident in which Smith’s co-star Will Smith publicly slapped Chris Rock on stage, Netflix announced that it was canceling Bright 2 and reports suggested that Bad Boys 4 was no longer in development.
Smith resigned from the Academy after apologizing to his fellow nominees and Rock, and he was banned from attending Academy events for the next decade.
Lawrence hasn’t spoken about the situation, but he’s had his difficulties and public fumbles, giving him maybe more compassion for Smith. In 1996, Lawrence was seen running into oncoming traffic in Sherman Oaks, California, and behaving erratically. Speaking with EBONY on being cast after the incident for Eddie Murphy’s film Life, he said “It was a tough time in my life at that time, and Eddie called and had Life ready for me… He wouldn’t do the movie with anybody else but me. So, I really love him for that.”
The three Bad Boys movies have grossed more than $840 million, with Bad Boys for Life (2020) earning more than $426 million. The release date and title of Bad Boys 4 have yet to be determined. For additional information, stay tuned.
