As reported, the respected filmmaker may executive produce a new series while directing its first two episodes. Brett Leonard, the playwright and TV writer, has written the script and will co-executive produce alongside Scorsese and his managers, Rick Yorn and Chris Donnelly. This October marks when they will shop the show around to various networks.
What started as one man’s vision to adapt the book “The Gangs of New York” into a movie became much more. Not only did Scorsese sign on to direct, but he also decided to focus on not just organized crime in New York City but also in areas like Chicago and New Orleans. Asbury’s book will serve as primary source material for the film. It will primarily focus on the rival gangs in NYC during the mid-to-late 1800s, before Prohibition in 1920, when things changed dramatically for gangsters across America.
