In a new Vanity Fair interview, Margot Robbie revealed that Disney had abandoned plans for a Pirates of the Caribbean spin-off film that would have reunited her with Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson.

“We had an idea, and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would’ve been really cool,” Robbie told the outlet about the proposed project with Disney. “But I guess they don’t want to do it.”

In June 2020, Hypebeast announced that Robbie was chosen to star in the new stand-alone Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Variety later confirmed this news and reported that Jerry Bruckheimer–the man who produced all five Johnny Depp Pirate films–was also working on this project.

The now-scrapped film aimed to introduce new characters inspired by the long-running Pirates ride at Disneyland, under the franchise banner– not center Depp’s Jack Sparrow. Notably, the franchise’s previous movies grossed $1.5 billion domestically and $3.07 billion globally.

Robbie’s next project is appearing in Damien Chazelle’s Babylon with Brad Pitt, Tobey Maguire, Diego Calva, Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, and Jean Smart.
