‘Mission: Impossible 8’ Still on Schedule to Resume Shooting Amid Writers’ Strike

According to reports, shooting for “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part Two” will not be delayed by the ongoing writers’ strike. The filming is set to resume later this summer once Tom Cruise and the rest of the cast have concluded their promotional activities for “Part One.”

Recently, Empire Magazine featured an interview with director Christopher McQuarrie, where he acknowledged the challenges and delays faced by his team during the production of the two “M: I” films.

McQuarrie stated, “Behind each tsunami is another tsunami. It’s unrelenting. We live in a state of 24-hour tsunami awareness. That’s just what we do.”

Although McQuarrie did not specifically mention delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the article implied that obstacles, including the ongoing writers’ strike, have already affected this double production.

This led to inaccurate reports from other film media outlets, such as Slash Film, stating that the writers’ strike had further prolonged the shooting hiatus. However, insiders from the studio clarify that McQuarrie and Cruise are taking a planned break to engage in interviews for “Dead Reckoning: Part One” and attend the film’s premiere in Rome next weekend.

The writers’ strike, now in its seventh week, has resulted in numerous shutdowns of film and TV productions, with shooting permits in the Los Angeles area dwindling to zero over the past month. Nevertheless, specific high-profile projects have persisted, including Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool 3,” which continues shooting in Canada with a rescheduled release date in May 2024.

However, ongoing talks between the actors’ union SAG-AFTRA and the studio labor representatives at the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers may impact productions still shooting during the writers’ strike. Failure to reach a new labor contract could lead to a potential strike authorized by SAG-AFTRA’s members if an agreement isn’t run by the June 30 deadline when the current contract expires.

In addition to halting all productions, an actors’ strike would disrupt publicity campaigns for various late summer films and the upcoming Emmy nominations announcement on July 12.

Fortunately, “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” will not be affected. Paramount insiders reveal that the film’s press junkets and premiere had been scheduled months in advance, unrelated to the SAG-AFTRA deadline. However, the publicity plans for other movies set for July and August release, such as Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” and “Blue Beetle,” as well as Universal’s Christopher Nolan film “Oppenheimer,” may face disruptions.

“Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” is slated for a theatrical release on July 12, while “Part Two” is scheduled to hit theaters on June 28, 2024.
