‘SNL’ Recap: Kerry Washington Tackles ‘Scandal’ ‘What Does My Girl Say’ and More (Video)

Date:

Kerry Washington played Michelle Obama and Oprah that poked fun at the lack of black women on Saturday Night Live on the opening skit.

Saturday Night Live  and Kerry Washington made a big hit with the show’s first skit. The Scandal star helped Saturday Night Live recent comments that the show’s cast lacked diversity.

Kerry Washington played Michelle Obama, causing President Obama played by Jay Pharoah, to say “I feel like it’s been years since I’ve seen you!” It actually was almost a year since anyone played Michelle Obama. (Maya Rudolph last played the first lady in February 2012.

Kerry Washington was also called upon to play Oprah Winfrey and then Beyonce.

A voiceover commented on the number of black women she will play on the SNL episode. “We make these requests because Ms. Washington is an actress of considerable range and talent – and also because SNL does not currently have a black woman on the cast. Mostly the latter,” the voiceover said. “We agree this is not an ideal situation and look forward to rectifying it in the near future, unless, of course, we fall in love with another white guy first.”

Kerry Washington’s opening monologue highlighted her role on ABC’s Scandal where she plays political attorney with the ability to fix any problematic situation. Washington later worked with Jay Pharoah as they released a parody of the ‘Ylvis’ “The Fox”. Instead of what the sound a fox makes, it tackles the question “What does my girl say”? with Kerry Washington playing a jealous girlfriend.

Kerry Washington, Jay Pharaoh and Kenan Thompson joined together for a political talk show. The skit centered on the idea that African Americans will support Obama no matter what – even the current Obamacare mixup and NSA wiretapping scandals.

“I thought white people would be more excited about their phones being tapped, considering how much they like The Wire,” said Pharoah’s character.

Saturday Night Live also highlighted on Obama’s foreign policy problems during the Weekend Update, with a distraught German Chancellor Andrea Merkel played by Kate McKinnon, discussing how embarrased she was that Obama eavesdropped on her text messages, google searches and phone calls.

Eminem gave a solid performance with his new track Berserk.

Saturday Night Live will continue to run reruns until November 16 where Lady Gaga will host and be the musical guest.

Overall, I think Kerry washington did an amazing job portraying a ton of different characters and roles. It really illustrates how talented and diverse of an actress she really is.
