The Original ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Ending was Cut For Being Too Sad

Date:

The original ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ ending was removed for being too sad.

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn recently told fans of the hit Marvel movie that the movie’s original ending had to be changed because it was way too sad. Does that mean that Groot was killed and never returned? Probably not.

James Gunn explained that the original ending of the Marvel sci-fi thriller saw Peter Quill’s grandfather learn that his young grandson had been abducted. However, Marvel’s think-tank realized that the ending needed to be changed because it was “freaking sad.”

According to SlashFilm, Gunn revealed at the launch of Guardians of the Galaxy Blu-ray edition that he worried people would not recognize Quill’s grandfather, with make-up. But, he explained that it was a really sweet moment that unfortunately, had to be removed from the movie.

“He has this photograph of Meredith (Peter Quill’s mother) and Peter as a little boy and he looks up at the stars and we go up to the stars and it was really sweet. It means that he must have seen Quill getting abducted at the end of that day and is still waiting for him to return but it was freaking sad so we took it out.”

That makes perfect sense. Seeing Peter Quill’s grandfather would have changed the entire ending of the movie, ending the movie on a low note.

James Gunn also admitted that he removed several other actors from the movie. According to reports, Benicio Del Toro’s The Collector and Karen Gillan’s Nebula, both of whom were major components of the intergalactic posse, both ended up on the cutting room floor. James Gunn explained that he wanted people to love “the good team” at the end of the movie and that is why he chose to include Michael Rooker’s Yondu despite, being a pest to Peter Quill for most of the movie. However, James Gunn admitted he was upset that he was forced to leave out Karen Gillan’s final scene as Nebula. He explained that he “loved it” before explaining that her featured scene only consisted of “walking through this field all pissed off with a busted Ravager vehicle behind her.” There are rumors speculating that the pair will return in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
