Sony is Planning Another ‘Spider-Man’ Reboot

Date:

Sony Pictures is in development for another Spider-Man reboot and it will most likely be without Andrew Garfield.

Sony Hack reveals Sony Pictures is development for another ‘Spider-Man’ reboot. According to the Daily Beast, leaked documents show that the movie studio is eyeing another director, and will explore the Marvel superhero’s journey as an adult.

The hacking of Sony continues to make an impact. In addition to the scathing comments about everyone from President Obama to Angelina Jolie, the gender pay gap that compensated Jennifer Lawrence less than her male co-stars, there have also been several reports of superhero movie news leaked by the CEO of Sony Pictures, Amy Pascal. Emails between Pascal and various executives revealed that the movie studio was disappointed with The Amazing Spider-Man 2, as well as the director’s Marc Webb’s deal on The Amazing Spider-Man 3. There are also rumors that Sony is interested in hiring the Russo brothers, the directing duo behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier, to produce an upcoming Spider-Man film, and possibly direct one of the Avengers: Infinity War movies.

From the Daily Beast:

The first two pages of the 8-page attachment gushes about what makes Spider-Man such an indelible hero, saying, “To argue that there’s plenty of other superhero movies with levity in the marketplace, so why make more Spider-Man movies, would be akin to saying there’s no room for James Bond films because of all the espionage films and franchises that have come out over the years. There will always be room for this beloved, iconic hero.”

Then, under the bold headline “Rebooting Spider-Man,” Robinov describes a broad vision for the future of the franchise. “In the next Spider-Man movies, we can’t go back to his origin story. Think of the 25 films in the James Bond franchise; just because a new creative team comes aboard, and breathes new life into a classic property, doesn’t mean the origin story has to be retold.”

What comes next is a “list of filmmakers that come to mind” to direct the Spider-Man reboot, and they include the directors of Frozen, Whiplash, Attack the Block, Crazy, Stupid Love, Guardians of the Galaxy, Big Hero 6, The Lego Movie, Kon-Tiki and Harry Potter.

But what would you expect in the reboot of The Amazing Spider-Man? Jeff Robinov, head of the Studio 8 creative team for Sony explained that they are interested in tackling 2012’s “single greatest Spider-Man storyline of all time.”

In it, Kraven the Hunter tracks down Spider-Man, shoots him repeatedly, and leaves him for dead, buried underground. He then dons a Spider-Man costume and savagely starts attacking criminals.

What makes this story resonate with fans is that it proves it takes more than just the costume to become “Spider-Man.” No matter what he’s wearing, or what predicament he’s facing, Peter Parker is sensitive, passionate, and connected to those he’s interacting with in a very powerful way. It’s not Peter’s powers that make him special – Kraven, and every other superhuman in the Marvel Universe, all have powers. Peter is special because of his values, because of what drives him, because of the lessons he’s learned from Uncle Ben’s death, and because of his love for Mary Jane. I’ve pasted a few pivotal pages from this book so you can see just how intense this storyline is.

We also get to see how Mary Jane deals with Peter’s disappearance, and how she would react if Peter ever died in action. [via]

Another storyline included making Spider-Man an adult.

Another side of Spider-Man that might be interesting to explore in a reboot is seeing him as an adult. Spidey hasn’t remained a teenager over the 52 years he’s been around. He’s moved in with his girlfriend, gotten married, and in some storylines, even became a science teacher at a high school.

It might feel fresh to see Peter Parker juggling with adult issues. He’s done so in the comics for decades, and kids still found this fun to read. [via]

However, it is possible that Sony Pictures is attempting to sell the Spider-Man franchise back to Marvel Studios. According to the Latino Review, Marvel does not want to give Sony Pictures creative control of the next Spider-Man. Instead, Marvel wants to get rid of Andrew Garfield and recreate the Spider-Man character for the Marvel Universe.

“IF the Marvel/Sony deal were to go forward,” says Latino Review, “Andrew Garfield would no longer be Peter Parker and any baggage from existing films, [directors Sam] Raimi or [Marc] Webb, would be non-canonical.” Marvel wants a clean slate, apparently, and they are not interested in doing any more so-called “romance” movies but would rather “focus on the difficulties of being a teenager and a superhero with a romance side-story.” Neither is an origin story part of the plan, so a Marvel Spidey movie would reportedly pick up with Peter Parker already living his double life as a hero.

Additionally, these sources say that Spider-Man making his debut in Captain America: Civil War, which is one item that Sony and Marvel had discussed before their initial talks broke down, could still happen and would serve as Spider-Man’s introduction to the MCU. If this does take place, it would surely be in a small role or a cameo as the Civil War script is said to be pretty much locked.
