Facebook can now serve your divorce papers.
Trying to get rid of your husband or wife but, you can’t find them? Are you desperately in need of a divorce but, you can’t get the other person to sit down with you and sign those papers? Well, Facebook is here to solve your problems. According to a landmark ruling, it is now acceptable for your spouse to send you divorce papers through Facebook messages as long as the papers are sent every week for three weeks it is legal and binding.
From New York Daily News:
The “last address plaintiff has for defendant is an apartment that he vacated in 2011,” [Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Matthew] Cooper said. Baidoo “has spoken with defendant by telephone on occasion and he has told her that he has no fixed address and no place of employment. He has also refused to make himself available to be served with divorce papers.”
The “post office has no forwarding address for him, there is no billing address linked to his prepaid cell phone, and the Department of Motor Vehicles has no record of him,” the ruling says.
The first messages have already gone out and Baidoo, an upset wife, and her lawyer are waiting for her estranged husband to respond.
