Casting for ‘Finding Freedom: The Journey of Robert Smalls’ Touring Production

A powerful and emotionally resonant theatrical adaptation of Finding Freedom: The Journey of Robert Smalls is seeking non-union performers for a TYA (Theatre for Young Audiences) tour. This ensemble-driven production reimagines the heroic true story of Robert Smalls, who escaped slavery, led a Confederate ship to freedom, served in the Civil War, and later became a U.S. Congressman. Produced by the Charleston Gaillard Center and adapted by JaMeeka D. Holloway, the tour will explore themes of bravery, justice, and resilience for a national audience.

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform multiple roles in a physically dynamic, ensemble-style TYA production

  • Engage young audiences through compelling storytelling and character-driven performance

  • Participate in rehearsals and touring dates with a commitment to professional excellence

  • Collaborate closely with cast and creative teams throughout the rehearsal and tour periods

Requirements

  • All roles are non-union, and performers must be available for the initial tour run from January 5, 2026 – February 2, 2026

  • Must be available for two additional potential national tour windows:

    • Mid-September to Mid-December 2026

    • Mid-January to Mid-May 2027

  • Seeking the following roles:

    • Robert “Smalls” Smalls – Black, male-presenting, 20s–50s

    • Lydia Polite / Ensemble 1 – Black, female-presenting, 30s–50s

    • Hannah Smalls / Ensemble 2 – Black, female-presenting, 20s–40s

    • The Antagonist / Ensemble 3 – White-presenting, any gender expression, mid-20s–50s

    • Gourdine / Ensemble 4 – Black, male-presenting, 20s–40s

Compensation

  • $715 weekly salary

  • Housing provided for non-local cast members

  • Opportunity to work on a nationally toured, socially impactful production
