Elizabeth Olsen’s Godzilla Experience: Challenges and Takeaways

Date:

Key Takeaways:

– Elizabeth Olsen found it challenging to transition from indie films to Godzilla’s large-scale production.
– She recognized two main hurdles during Godzilla’s shooting: working with a child actor and managing extensive visual effects.
– She credited director Gareth Edwards’ shared background in indie films for a smoother transition.

Elizabeth Olsen: From Indie Darling to Big Blockbuster Actress

Talented and successful, Elizabeth Olsen is well-known for her role as Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But before donning the red cloak and embodying the role of superhero, Olsen had an impressive track record in Hollywood. Her career is peppered with meaningful roles in critically acclaimed indie films.

Transitioning to Mainstream with Godzilla

Around the release of Godzilla in 2014, Olsen sat with ScreenRant for an expansive interview about her experiences in the film. One intriguing question focused on her transition from indie films, which are notorious for their strict budgets and shooting schedules, to Godzilla’s large scale production.

In contrast to indie films where actors often do not have the luxury of multiple takes, big-budget films offer more flexibility. Yet, Olsen negated the presumption of this transition being a hurdle. She credited the director, Gareth Edwards, who shared her indie background, for making it seamless and comfortable.

Challenges of Godzilla Production

However, the Godzilla production wasn’t devoid of challenges. Olsen mentioned two distinct aspects that she found difficult. One was acting with a child. It’s no news that it can be tricky to work with child actors on a movie set, a challenge that Olsen didn’t shy away from acknowledging.

The second significant challenge was grappling with visual effects. Godzilla, with its plot revolving around a mythical monster, had sizable segments of its film dedicated to computer-generated imagery (CGI).

Working with extensive CGI could sometimes be complex and demanding. Olsen confessed that understanding camera movements and coordinating with the timing of the scenes was particularly tough. It was a struggle as many parts of the scenes were fabricated and substituted with green screens.

This challenge was about more than learning to work with CGI. It involved understanding how to find freedom and flexibility in rigid technological aspects.

Ironically, a year after Godzilla, Olsen entered the Marvel Universe where magic and robotics are the norms. Her character, the Scarlet Witch, employs mind-driven powers and is part of an unusual romance with a robot.

Godzilla: A Turning Point

Despite its challenges, Godzilla marked a significant transition for Olsen from the indie space to blockbuster films. It also prepared her for future roles that heavily relied on CGI, including her iconic part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It seems that this blend of experiences, both in indie films and Hollywood’s mainstream cinema, contributes significantly to the credibility and diversity of Elizabeth Olsen’s acting career.

This post is sourced from an interview featured on FandomWire. Godzilla is available for streaming now on Max. Enjoy it and experience Olsen’s outstanding performance in a different light.
