Marlon Wayans Accuses Weinsteins of Financial Exploitation Over ‘Scary Movie’ Royalties

Date:

Key Takeaways:

– Marlon Wayans accuses Harvey and Bob Weinstein of financial exploitation in relation to the ‘Scary Movie’ franchise.
– The comedic actor claims that the Weinstein brothers used poor business practices and owes his family a significant amount of money.
– In an interview with The New York Times, Wayans graphically compared their financial actions to a sexual assault metaphor.

The Contentious Statements From Wayans

Marlon Wayans, the noted American actor and comedian, recently made headlines by accusing producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein of exploiting him and his family monetarily with regards to the ‘Scary Movie’ franchise. In a stark illustration, Wayans equated their financial actions to rape during a recent New York Times podcast, The Interview.

The ‘Scary Movie’ franchise, deriving its content from multiple horror films, was co-written and starred by Wayans and his brother Shawn, with their elder brother Keenen Ivory Wayans as the director. Distributed by the Weinstein’s company, Dimension Films, the original movie of the series inspired four sequels.

Wayans’ Statement and Its Repercussions

During the podcast, Wayans was queried about the potential monetary benefits he and his family could receive from an impending reboot of the franchise by Paramount and Miramax. Choosing his words carefully, Wayans referred to the Weinsteins in a robust sexual assault metaphor, associating them with the act of “rape”.

Understanding the weight of such a claim, especially in the light of Harvey Weinstein’s legal woes and eventual conviction for rape, podcast host David Marchese contested the choice of metaphor. Marchese took issue with the lumping together of financial exploitation and physical assault, suggesting they were “not the same”.

In response, Wayans clarified that the rape metaphor was used both in a literal sense, due to Harvey Weinstein’s crimes, and in a business perspective. He further expressed that the Weinsteins were “terrible people”, insinuating they crossed boundaries in their business dealing.

Bob Weinstein refuted any unsuitable actions during a conversation with the Times. Harvey Weinstein was unable to give any feedback since he’s in prison because of the rape conviction.

Following Up With Wayans

Days after the initial conversation, Marchese spoke to Wayans again to clarify his metaphor choice and its intended implication. Wayans offered his perspective by acknowledging the damage they suffered due to the Weinsteins’ business behavior. Labeling the Weinsteins as “monsters”, he highlighted that even in a business context, their monstrous actions were evident.

This wasn’t the first time Wayans had spoken out about his experiences with the Weinsteins. Marking the 20th anniversary of the first ‘Scary Movie’, Wayans shared with Variety that dealing with the Weinsteins was unpleasant. He described them as “not the best or kindest people to be in business with” and deemed their behavior as rude and disrespectful.

Wayans elaborated on the dismay he felt when he found out they were excluded from ‘Scary Movie 3’. He signified that while they could have pursued legal action, they chose to focus on creating something new. According to Wayans, the Weinsteins “still owe us money, lots of money”, underlining just how far-reaching the financial exploitation extends.

In conclusion, while blurred boundaries and controversial decisions are commonplace in the world of film and entertainment, Wayans’ allegory serves as a stark reminder of the impact such allegations can have on individuals, families, and industries. As more people in the industry share their experiences, it’s clear that transparency and fairness in business relationships are undeniable essentials.
