About:
Boom Pole Operator/Sound Professional
I’m an entertainer/Musician. I started to look into other career options because covid-19 gave me concerns about safely pursuing my career. People are constantly hugging and kissing me, shouting my accolades and social distancing is basically out. I started looking into the film industry because of the huge migration of film industry companies to Atlanta. It didn’t take me long to find my niche.
When I went to Huston’s School of the Performing Arts, I came away with the feeling that Film was all about a different type of acting. I don’t know how I missed the importance of audio, but after spending the best part of a year working with a small company (The ONI Committee) under the Direction of Jo Black, I quickly learned audio’s huge contribution.
Being a musician and with the emergence of Midi and digital audio, I have had a recording studio in my residence most of my life. I am more than competent at mixing and mastering music. You’re asking yourself what this has to do with anything. The most important job of a Boom Pole Operator is not to know how and where to hold the pole, determining the best angle and position to stand in the scene. Though those things are important, the thing you can’t teach is the ability to hear. Oh, everyone can listen but do they hear the faint sound of barking by the dog down the street, the shuffling of feet on the room just above you, the ticking of that digital clock in the kitchen, that air-conditioning system coming on or the 2 acters in the next room discussing a scene. A sound engineer’s greatest asset is their ability to hear. Our biggest responsibility is to get quiet on the set. I’ve been training my ear for 50 years. I believe I can do that for you.
