Aaliyah-Marie Dempsey

Aaliyah-Marie is an emerging visual/sound artist, choreographer/composer, and dancer. She was raised between Nashville and Chicago, and is based in New York City. Her work balances archival-based practices with contemporary voices through experimental approaches to performance in sound, theater, and dance. Her visual work concerns the aesthetic properties of choros [dance] gráphein [scratching, carving, cutting, drawing] through lens, paper, and fiber-based works and sculpture. Mediating on field theory and movement studies, she uses ethnographic practices and surrealist superpositions as a framework. She graduated from New York University's Gallatin School for Interdisciplinary Studies and has been honored by her university and recognized nationally by foundations such as YoungArts and Scholastic.
