Robert Pattinson Says It Would Be ‘Tough’ for His Batman to Exist Within James Gunn’s DCU

Date:

Robert Pattinson has addressed one of the biggest questions surrounding the future of Batman: Could his version of Bruce Wayne eventually join James Gunn’s DC Universe?

According to Pattinson, bringing his Batman into the larger DCU could be difficult.

Speaking with LADbible, Pattinson explained that Matt Reeves has created such a specific world around his version of Bruce Wayne that separating the character from that environment would be challenging.

“I think it would be kind of tough to have this version of Bruce outside of that world,” Pattinson said.

His comments add more context to an ongoing discussion among DC fans about whether Pattinson could eventually share the screen with David Corenswet’s Superman and other heroes in the interconnected DCU.

For now, however, DC Studios continues to treat Reeves’ Batman franchise as separate from its primary cinematic universe.

Why Robert Pattinson Thinks His Batman Is Different

Pattinson’s explanation goes beyond continuity.

The actor described how deeply the atmosphere of The Batman affects his performance and even his experience while making the movies.

According to Pattinson, spending months working within Reeves’ dark interpretation of Gotham can become psychologically immersive. He described being surrounded by darkness both in terms of the story’s mood and the actual lighting conditions during production.

That atmosphere is fundamental to Reeves’ interpretation of Batman.

Released in 2022, The Batman presented Bruce Wayne as a younger vigilante still developing his identity as Gotham’s protector. Rather than focusing heavily on the larger superhero universe surrounding Batman in DC Comics, the movie leaned into detective fiction, crime thrillers, corruption, and psychological drama.

Pattinson’s Batman therefore exists in a world designed around a grounded version of Gotham City.

Moving that character into a universe populated by more overtly fantastical heroes could create a major tonal shift.

The Batman and James Gunn’s DCU Are Separate

Importantly, Pattinson’s comments do not represent a new separation between the franchises.

DC Studios established that distinction years ago.

When James Gunn and Peter Safran announced the first slate of projects for their new DC Universe in 2023, Gunn specifically confirmed that the DCU would introduce its own Batman.

That character is planned to appear in The Brave and the Bold.

Gunn explicitly said the Batman introduced in that project would not be Robert Pattinson’s version.

Instead, Pattinson would continue working with Reeves on The Batman Part II.

That means audiences are effectively getting two different live-action Batman franchises under DC Studios: Reeves’ standalone interpretation and a separate Batman designed for the interconnected DCU.

What Is The Brave and the Bold?

The Brave and the Bold is one of the major projects announced for the DCU’s opening chapter, “Gods and Monsters.”

The movie is expected to introduce the DC Universe’s Batman alongside Damian Wayne, Bruce Wayne’s son and one of the characters who becomes Robin.

Gunn has said the project draws inspiration from Grant Morrison’s Batman comics. DC Studios co-chair Peter Safran has also said the movie is intended to explore additional members of the Bat-Family.

That setup already represents a major difference from Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne.

Reeves’ version focuses on a comparatively early stage in Batman’s career. The Brave and the Bold, meanwhile, is being designed around a Batman who already has a son and connections to a larger group of crime-fighting characters.

No actor has been officially announced as the DCU Batman in The Brave and the Bold.

Why Fans Wanted Robert Pattinson’s Batman in the DCU

It is easy to understand why the possibility continues generating discussion.

Batman and Superman are two of DC Comics’ most recognizable heroes, and their partnership has been central to countless comics, animated projects, television series, and movies.

James Gunn’s Superman, starring David Corenswet, launched in theaters in 2025 as the first feature film in the new DCU.

Pattinson already had an established Batman franchise.

Combining the two could therefore seem like a straightforward way to bring Batman into the interconnected universe.

But the creative differences between their respective worlds are significant.

Gunn’s DCU embraces a universe where superheroes, aliens, monsters, and other extraordinary characters can coexist. Reeves’ Batman films have so far emphasized Gotham’s criminal underworld and a more grounded detective-driven approach.

Pattinson appears aware of that contrast.

When discussing how his Batman might interact with characters from Gunn’s universe, he even joked that his character could simply make everyone else more serious.

What Pattinson’s Comments Reveal About Acting

For actors, Pattinson’s comments provide an interesting look at what happens when performers spend months inhabiting highly stylized characters.

A performance is not created in isolation.

Production design, lighting, costumes, direction, cinematography, sets, scripts, and other actors all influence how a performer approaches a character.

Pattinson described Reeves’ Gotham as something that becomes difficult to separate from his interpretation of Bruce Wayne.

That is particularly relevant for actors working on long productions.

Maintaining the emotional and physical characteristics of a role over several months requires consistency, especially when playing a character as recognizable as Batman.

It also demonstrates why the same comic book character can feel dramatically different depending on the filmmaker and production surrounding the performance.

The Batman Part II Is Coming in 2028

Pattinson is not finished with Gotham.

The Batman Part II is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on February 18, 2028, following changes to its previous release schedule.

The sequel will continue Matt Reeves’ Batman storyline rather than bringing Pattinson into Gunn’s interconnected DC Universe.

That means audiences can expect Reeves’ distinctive Gotham to remain an important part of DC Studios’ film strategy even while the main DCU develops separately.

Could Robert Pattinson Still Join the DCU?

Pattinson did not categorically declare that a crossover could never happen.

His comments focused instead on why placing his particular interpretation of Bruce Wayne outside Reeves’ world would be creatively difficult.

However, DC Studios’ publicly announced strategy remains clear: Pattinson’s Batman and the primary DCU Batman are separate characters.

Gunn has previously described The Brave and the Bold as the introduction of the DCU’s Batman and explicitly distinguished that character from Pattinson’s.

Unless those plans change, fans should expect two different versions of the Dark Knight to continue developing on screen.

For actors and filmmakers, the unusual situation also demonstrates how major entertainment franchises can support dramatically different interpretations of the same source material.

Pattinson’s Batman can remain grounded in Reeves’ dark crime saga while the DCU develops another Bruce Wayne capable of interacting with Superman and the wider universe.

With The Batman Part II now heading toward 2028, Pattinson still has plenty of time left under the cowl.
