Synopsis: “Rutka” is a groundbreaking indie-rock musical set in 1943 war-torn Poland, premiering in Cincinnati. It tells the story of Rutka and her teenage friends living in a Jewish ghetto during World War II. This musical is inspired by “Rutka’s Notebook,” the real diary of Rutka Laskier, a 14-year-old girl whose poignant and introspective writings capture the essence of her daily life amidst the backdrop of the Holocaust. Audiences are drawn into a world of teenage angst filled with friendship, first love, and the resilience of youth under extraordinary circumstances.

Roles Available:

  • RUTKA: Female, 18+ to play 14, Jewish. Rutka is a lively, bold teenager with a unique charm and a sharp wit. She is intelligent, funny, and spirited, with a penchant for sarcasm and a deep capacity for introspection and joy. Candidates should be able to portray a range of emotions typical of a young girl on the brink of adulthood, navigating a turbulent world.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform in both rehearsals and live performances, adhering to the director’s artistic vision.
  • Bring authenticity and emotional depth to the character of Rutka, contributing to a powerful, ensemble-driven narrative.
  • Work collaboratively with the cast and crew to ensure a seamless integration of musical and dramatic elements.
  • Maintain professionalism and a high standard of performance throughout the production run.

Requirements:

  • Strong singing ability with folk/indie rock sensibilities. Female roles should be able to mix/belt up to C/D; male roles should be able to reach at least a G.
  • Must be 18 years or older and capable of convincingly playing a 14-year-old.
  • Experience in theater, particularly in musicals, preferred but not essential for talented newcomers.
  • Must be open to feedback and capable of dynamic performance adjustments according to directorial input.
  • ALL ethnicities are encouraged to audition. We are committed to casting a show that reflects racial diversity and gender identification inclusivity.

Compensation:

  • $1,100 weekly minimum, as per LORT guidelines.
