[WATCH] Casting Directors Share “Cold Reading” Audition Tips You Should Know

Date:

During acting auditions many actors are often times asked to do cold readings. But, what is a cold reading?

A Theatrical cold reading is reading aloud from a script or other text with little or no rehearsal,[1] practice or study in advance. Sometimes also referred to as sight reading, it is a technique used by actors and other performers in theatre, television, and film performance fields.

Cold readings are common in performance classes, and furthermore are employed frequently in actor auditions to allow the producer or playwright to get a general idea of the actors’ performing capabilities

However, if you’re prepared or familiar with cold readings, then it can ruin your chances at becoming an actor.

Recently, Arvold Casting, the casting director behind several popular TV shows and movies, shared acting tips for actors to learn how to have a great cold read. In the video, Erica Arvold, CSA, and actor coach Richard Warner talk about what the casting director actually expects, some common misconceptions, and give some techniques and pragmatic tips for a successful cold read.

If you have anything you’d like answered, please send an email to Arvold Casting at [email protected].
