Live-Action ‘Powerful Girls’ TV Series is Coming Soon to The CW

The CW moves forward on several TV shows for the 2021-2022 season, including a pilot order for the live-action Powerpuff Girls series.

According to Variety, The CW announced three pilots and one straight-to-series pickup. These shows include the USA Network series The 4400. Two other pilots are for the DC project “Naomi” from Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship and an untitled religious comedy from Claire Rothrock and Ryann Weir. It is important to note women create all projects.

The Powerpuff Girls live-action series was first announced in development in August. Based on the Cartoon Network series created by Craig McCracken. The new series centers around the pint-sized superheroes as upset twenty-somethings upset they lost their childhood to fighting crime.

The project comes from writers and executive producers Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody. Cody is executive producing via Vita Vera Films. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and David Madden will executive produce via Berlanti Productions. Erika Kennair will have alongside Warner Bros. Television will produce.

The animated TV series ran for six seasons and nearly 80 episodes between 1998 and 2005. The Powerpuff Girls Movie was released in 2002, and a rebooted series started on Cartoon Network in 2016.

The 4400 Reboot TV Series

The 4400 focuses on the overlooked and marginalized people who vanished without a trace and instantly returned after missing 100 years ago. The people have not aged a day and have no memory of what happened to them. As the government tries to contain the story, the group of people must deal with the idea they returned with upgrades and believe they are all back for a specific reason.

The CW started working on the series in 2018. Ariana Jackson will write and executive produce, with Anna Fricke and Laura Terry also executive producing. CBS Studios will produce. The original series featured Joel Gretsch, Jacqueline McKenzie, Conchita Campbell, and Mahershala Ali. It ran for four seasons and 44 episodes on the USA Network from 2004 – 2007.

Naomi TV Series

Naomi was announced in early December. The show follows a teen girl’s journey from a small town to a multiverse. A supernatural event shakes her hometown, Naomi goes out to discover its origins. Ava DuVernay is attached to write and executive produce the series. DuVernay will executive produce via ARRAY Filmworks. Naomi’s character was originally debuted in her own standalone comic book series in 2019, which was written by Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker.
