Miss Universe 2015’s Mistake a Publicity Stunt?

Date:

Miss Universe 2015 has come and gone and here and people are starting to think Steve Harvey’s mistake was a publicity stunt.

Yesterday evening, Miss Colombia was crowned Miss Universe, at the Miss Universe pageant. This ended up being a huge mistake. It was Miss Philippines who should have been crowned (and was, eventually), but host Steve Harvey read the cue card incorrectly.

Here is a video of the mistake:

Steve Harvey quickly took responsibility. “I want to apologize emphatically to Miss Philippians and Miss Columbia,” he tweeted. “This was a terribly honest human mistake and I am so regretful.”

But, Miss Universe may have an even bigger problem. According to reports, ratings for Miss Universe have plummeted. According to TheWrap, “the competition slipped 15 percent in the main demo versus last year, and was down 19 percent among total viewers.”

While TheWrap does provide reasons why the ratings could be argued but, the fact of the matter is, people are not that interested in beauty pageants any more. Fox had 6.2 million people tune in on Sunday losing out to NBC’s “Football Night in America” which had 6.5 million viewers and “Sunday Night Football” which had 15.9 million viewers.

You can probably argue that Steve Harvey’s mistake is the best thing that happened to the Miss Universe series, bringing more attention to the dying annual program.
