Adult Swim’s TV series Million Dollar Extreme Presents: World Peace had reportedly featured hidden racist messages.
Earlier this week, actor Brett Gelman made national news when he announced that he quit working with the late-night Adult Swim network. Gelman explained that he left the network because of one show in particular: Million Dollar Extreme Presents: World Peace, which has been bashed because of it’s alleged connections with alternative-right political groups.
Million Dollar Extreme Presents: World Peace is led by Sam Hyde. In one episode, Hyde wore blackface. In addition, according to a report by Buzzfeed, Adult Swim reportedly removed hidden racist messages from the show (emphasis my own).
According to one source with knowledge of the network’s operations, it’s likely that Lazzo is already aware of the show’s solicitations of the alt-right. The same source said that the Adult Swim standards department repeatedly found coded racist messages in the show, including swastikas, which were removed ahead of broadcast. None of this was enough, according to one of the sources, to convince Lazzo not to air the show.
In addition, employees working with Adult Swim who wanted to remain anonymous in the Buzzfeed report said, people with shows were aware of it [MDE] and angry about it,” and another added, “I know at least one person who is very high up there who was furious about it before it came out.”
In a recent interview with Huffington Post, Gelman explained, “I’m all for free speech, and I don’t need my viewpoint to be the only viewpoint. [But] I am not for something that mobilizes propaganda.”
The show’s creator had this to say about the show after the scathing reports.
2- the people who want us off air have started to personally BULLY & threaten [as] employees. If yr on our side make sure you dont do same.
