Jared Leto will play Andy Warhol in an upcoming biopic.
Jared Leto will produce the film alongside Micahel De Luca, with Boardwalk Empire’s Terence Winter. De Luca has a long history of making award winning movies. In fact, he produced The Social Network and Captain Philips. Winter’s credits include The Wolf of Wall Street, Boardwalk Empire, and the recently canceled Vinyl series for HBO.
The movie will be based on the 1989 Victor Bockris book, Warhol: The Biography, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Leto and De Luca jointly acquired the rights to the book, having had a desire to partner on a project for some time now, according to sources. (Via THR)
Born in 1928, Warhol was a creative artist who was the center of the visual art movement also known as pop art. his works explore the connection between artistic expression and celebrity culture. By the 1960’s Warhol was an international star. His work become renowned and even controversial.
His studio, The Factory, was a popular hang out that brought together local artists, drag queens and celebrities. He managed a rock band and founded Interview magazine. The highest price ever paid for a Warhol painting is $105 million for a 1963 canvas called “Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster).”
This movie seems like a great fit for Jared Leto. Leto won an Oscar for playing a gay man battling Aids in the 2013 hit indie feature film Dallas Buyers Club and drew fans calling for the actor to play The Joker in Suicide Squad.
