Tom Cruise Held His Breath for SIX MINUTES for a ‘Mission Impossible 5’ Stunt

Date:

If you thought Tom Cruise couldn’t possibly out-do his Mission Impossible Rogue Nation A400 plane stunt, featuring Tom Cruise literally hanging from the plane as it took off, then you don’t know Tom Cruise.

In the latest Mission Impossible trailer it features Tom Cruise doing an intense underwater scene.

Tom Cruise told USA TODAY that he worked extensively for the underwater scene shot without a cut, training to hold his breath for over six minutes.

Says Cruise:

“It’s something I have always wanted to do. (Director Christopher McQuarrie) and I have been thinking about it since working on ‘Edge of Tomorrow.’ I have done a lot of underwater sequences. But we wanted to create a suspense underwater sequence without cuts. So doing that sequence was really interesting. We’re underwater and we’re doing breath-holds of 6 to 61/2 minutes. So I was doing all my training with the other stuff (on-set). It was very taxing stuff.”

Screen grab of youtube video 'Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation Trailer 2' Web to Watch - New installment of the Mission Impossible franchise means new ridiculous stunts from Tom Cruise. Cruise worked extensively for weeks with Kirk Krack, performance underwater trainer, for the breath training to complete the scene.

“When you’re making ‘Mission’ movies you’re working with athletes and stunt people at the height of their game,” says Cruise.

Rebecca Ferguson, who is the latest cast member to join the cast of the Mission Impossible franchise revealed that on her first day she scaled the Vienna Opera House with Tom Cruise and later took part in the infamous underwater scene.

Says Ferguson:

“When you are with Tom and the ‘Mission’ team, the best people are brought in to train you. So you are actually capable of managing everything. It’s incredible to know you have the ability to do these things.”
