Steven Spielberg Predicted CGI Would Replace Practical Filmmaking

Steven Spielberg‘s Premonition: The Rise of CGI and the Legacy of ‘The Mask of Zorro.’

In a recent interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Antonio Banderas celebrated the 25th anniversary of “The Mask of Zorro,” a classic adventure film directed by Martin Campbell and produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment. Released in 1998, the movie achieved significant success, grossing an impressive $250 million worldwide.

During the film’s production, Spielberg, an Oscar-winning director, and producer, had a profound insight into the future of filmmaking. He warned Antonio Banderas about the inevitable shift from practical effects to CGI in the movie industry.

Banderas fondly recalled Spielberg’s words on the set, “This is probably going to be one of the last Westerns shot in the way the Westerns were shot in the old days, with real scenes, real horses, authentic sword fighting, no CGI. Everything was practical.” Spielberg predicted a swift change in the filmmaking landscape, where computer-generated imagery (CGI) would take center stage.

Banderas said, “Things will change, and you should be proud of this movie.” After 25 years, Banderas expressed immense pride in his involvement in “Zorro,” recognizing its significant impact. The movie’s authentic and captivating approach, featuring real stunts and tangible elements, contributed to its timeless charm.

Following the success of “The Mask of Zorro,” Banderas and co-star Catherine Zeta-Jones reprised their roles in the 2005 sequel, “The Legend of Zorro.” However, the sequel did not match the box office triumph of its predecessor. Nevertheless, Banderas shared that various individuals have approached him with intriguing ideas for a potential third installment of the Zorro franchise.

Should a new movie come to fruition, Banderas revealed that he would be interested in playing a mentor role, passing the torch to the next Zorro, akin to Anthony Hopkins’ character in the original film. Embracing this opportunity would be a great honor for Banderas, as he values the franchise’s legacy regardless of whether another film materializes.

“The Mask of Zorro” continues to entertain audiences and has become accessible for streaming on MGM+ or Prime Video with the MGM+ add-on.

In conclusion, Spielberg’s prophetic understanding of the evolving film industry and his guidance on the set of “The Mask of Zorro” showcase his unparalleled vision. As CGI continues to revolutionize filmmaking, the impact of movies like “Zorro” resonates through time, leaving a lasting mark on cinema history.
