In a recent interview, Robert Downey Jr. took a moment to reflect on his illustrious career and revealed two films he considers the most important in the last 25 years. While many people associate Downey Jr. with his iconic role as Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, none of the MCU films made it to his esteemed “most important” list.
During a conversation with the New York Times, the acclaimed actor shared, “Honestly, the two most important films I’ve worked on in the last 25 years are The Shaggy Dog and Dolittle.” Surprisingly, these choices diverge from his widely recognized superhero persona. Downey Jr. explained that The Shaggy Dog, released in 2006 as a remake of the 1959 film, holds significance because it secured insurance for him with Disney. The movie, co-starring Tim Allen, Kristin Davis, and Danny Glover, didn’t fare well critically, earning a mere 26% on Rotten Tomatoes and experiencing underwhelming box office results.
Expanding on his selection, Downey Jr. stated, “The second most important film was Dolittle, as it represented a two-and-a-half-year challenge of unfulfilled potential. The strain it placed on my wife, who had to go to great lengths to salvage the film and ensure its marketability, was staggering.” Dolittle, released in 2020, also faced commercial disappointment. Notably, Robert’s wife, Susan Downey, was the film’s co-producer through their production company, Team Downey Productions. Reflecting on the experience, Downey Jr. added, “Following that ordeal, we experienced a transformative period where we reassessed our priorities and reevaluated our closest business advisors.”
While Downey Jr.’s choices might surprise some, it is evident that these films hold personal significance for the actor. His upcoming project, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, in which he stars, will hit theaters on July 21, further showcasing his versatility and talent.
