The Atlanta filmedĀ PassengersĀ movie fell flat in the box office during the Christmas weekend.
Sony’s gamble on two A-list actors, Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, did not perform as well as many analysts expected. The sci-fi original movie earned a low $25 million in the box office, so the feature film is going to need to do extremely well overseas in order to make up for the $110 million production. It is important to point out that Jennifer Lawrence’s last hit movie,Ā Joy,Ā didn’t perform well in the box office. Meanwhile, Chris Pratt has not landed a hit box office movie outside of a huge franchise or a large ensemble either.
But, bad movie reviews didn’t helpĀ PassengersĀ either. Currently sitting at a 32% rotten score onĀ Rotten Tomatoes,Ā critics called the movie “that even their chemistry isn’t enough to overcome a fatally flawed story.”
Meanwhile,Ā Denzel Washingtonās Fences opened on Christmas Day , for instance, and earned a solid $6.6 million, which is better than what Passengers earned on its opening day.
The winner for the box office Christmas weekend will go to Disney’sĀ Rogue One.Ā It earned close to $75 million over the weekend and today’s box-office returns should put it over $300 million domestically, keeping it on track to make it the highest grossing film of the year.
