Tyler Perry’s ‘Madea Halloween’ Beats Tom Cruise in the Box Office

Date:

Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween brought in an amazing $27.6 million in the box office.

That makes Tyler Perry’s latest feature film the biggest opening for a Madea branded feature film and for a Tyler Perry-directed movie since 2009’s Madea Goes to Jail.

Not only did Tyler Perry’s Atlanta filmed production break records, it also topped Tom Cruise’s latest feature film Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.

Analysts argue that Madea’s three year vacation from theaters must have been just what the character needed as audiences showed up for this feature film, and with an “A” CinemaScore from opening day, it should continue to dominate the box office until early November. In fact, analysts argue that Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween could earn well over $50 million, which is saying a lot for a movie that was filmed in only six days.

It’s important to point out that Tyler Perry is not the typical filmmaker. The former homeless aspiring screenplay writer, writes, directs, and produces all of his content. That includes several TV shows for the OWN Network and the first scripted series for the TLC network.

Meanwhile, Tom Cruise reprised his character in Paramount’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back with an estimated $23 million. In addition, Tom Cruise’s movie brought in an estimated $31 million internationally.

Coming in third place in the box office race was Ouija: Origin of evil. The prequel to the 2014 Ouija movie brought an estimated $14 million from over 3,000 theaters on a $9 million budget.
