Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will wrap it’s opening weekend with the second $100+ million box office opening of 2017, with industry analysts expecting an estimating the final total to be $145 million.
That opening, which hits Disney’s pre-weekend projection range of around $130 to $150 million, gives Disney at the two biggest opening weekends of 2017. In fact, Beauty and the Beast earned $174 million at the box office last March during its opening weekend.
In total, the movie has made $123 million internationally this weekend, bringing the global total to $427.6 million after releasing in 37 different markets last weekend. The sequel also got the widest opening in IMAX history, rolling out on over a thousand screens and 69 different markets.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 filmed in Atlanta, Georgia and takes place three months after the first film. The movie centers around Chris Pratt as he comes face-to-face with Ego, his long-lost father. In the movie, Ego reveals why he left Earth after falling in love with Star-Lord’s mother.
The original cast is all back, including Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan and Michael Rooker.
The movie’s director James Gunn will return to write and direct the third installments of the Guardians of the Galaxy series.
