Box Office Earnings Drop 97% Due to Coronavirus

Date:

Hollywood’s movie industry hits its lowest box office in decades.

AMC, Regal, and Cinemark shut down operations on Wednesday. Now, Hollywood reported the lowest box office figures since the film industry started tracking box office numbers decades ago.

North American cinemas took in less than $300,000 for all the movies currently in theaters, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The box office results are down 97% from the comparable date last year and is the lowest daily total in film history.

On the bright side, drive-in theaters saw a major rise in attendance. Since audiences view movies from their cars, it is still possible to watch a movie with a crowd and follow social distancing mandates. That said, there are not many drive-in movie theaters left around the country.

Hollywood studios are delaying all new movies including ‘Mulan’, ‘Fast and Furious 9’, Marvel’s ‘Black Widow’, ‘A Quiet Place Part II’ and the 007 spy-drama ‘No Time To Die’, even drive-ins that do manage to stay open won’t be getting any new films in the near future.
