J.J. Abrams wants to see Ava DuVernay director ‘Star Wars’ movie.
The director of ‘Selma’ would “just kill it,” says the director of The Force Awakens.
“To me, the knee-jerk reaction if I had to [name someone] is Ava DuVernay, who I think would just kill it,” Abrams told Nerdist when asked about other female writers or directors he would like to see working on a Star Wars movie.
“She is as much a fan of genre movies … and hearing her talk about, not just Star Wars, but hearing her talk about those kinds of films is evidence that she would just kill it,” he continued. “When you look at her work in Selma, which was as well told, sophisticated and humane as I think has come out in the last decade, I mean, she is just — if she can do thatstory that well, there’s no question she’d kill [a Star Wars] movie.”
DuVernay took to Twitter to share the video of Abrams’ comments, adding her piece of commentary:

But, it may be a while before Ava DuVernay will have the opportunity to direct a Star Wars movie. The future of ‘Star Wars’ is all white males; Gareth Edwards will direct ‘Rogue One’, Rian Johnson will director Episode VIII and Colin Trevorrow will direct Episode IX.
The untitled Han Solo movie was supposed to be directed by Josh Trank before he left the movie this year and replaced by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord in July.
Ava DuVernay was in discussions to director 2018’s ‘Black Panther’ for LucasFilm’s sister studio Marvel, but dropped out of the production saying that she and the studio “just didn’t see eye to eye” on the movie.
