As been over a decade since Austin Powers was last seen in theaters, however, the international man of mystery and his crazy costars are still pop culture icons. Now, 15 years laterĀ a new Austin Powers movie may be headed to theaters sooner than you think.
The film’s director Jay Roach expressed his desire to bring Austin Powers back to the big screen. While talking with The Hollywood Reporter about the legacy of the Austin Powers trilogy, Roach confirmed that he and Mike Myers have spoken about a potential fourth movie.
So what took so long? Apparently, the two decided not to make another movie until they had a perfect idea.
“We have also always said we don’t want to do it unless we came up with something that lived up to the concepts in our mind. Until Mike feels like he has a concept that earns a fourth, it won’t happen. But if it did, we have all agreed that we would be delighted to get back into it.”
Rumors of a fourth Austin Powers movie goes as far back as 2011, but nothing concrete has ever materialized outside of speculation.
It is important to note that Myers wrote the first film in remembrance and tribute to his father. He and his father loved watching spy movies, and after his father died in 1991, he decided to write a film in remembrance of him. That said, Myers is cautious in the direction of the franchise and takes the franchise very personally.
“I would love to do another, but you just have to see. I was devastated by my father’s death. But to have that turn into something that makes people happy is unbelievably satisfying. It’s that kind of stuff you never get used to or get tired of.”
