The Walking Dead and the Tupac biopic, All Eyez On Me are both filming in Atlanta, Georgia which makes this next piece of news not a surprise.
The Walking Dead’s Danai Gurira must have went to the open casting call as she will play Tupac Shakur’s mother, Afeni Shakur in the All Eyez On Me biopic.
Casting directors paired Gurira with unknown actor Demetrius Shipp, Jr. to play the historical and legendary mother Afeni Shakur. And it already looks like a smart move if the filmmakers are interested in emulating the success of last year’s beloved and highly profitable NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton.
All Eyez on Me is directed by Benny Boom and centers around the life and times of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur. The movie features Jamal Woolard, Demetrius Shipp Jr., and Patrick Faucette. It took a long time for production to start on the movie but, following the success of Straight Outta Compton, it seems like it is perfect timing.
There is a pretty good chance that Gurira will be perfect and will shine as Afeni, who not only gave brith to Tupac from prison but, as a former Black Panther member, was the source of so much of Tupac’s political awareness.
The casting makes more sense if you have ever seen her outside of The Walking Dead. Gurira starred in Mother of George playing a Brooklyn-based Nigerian immigrate struggling to have a child with her husband. Most recently, Gurira wrote the off Broadway play Eclipsed, starring Academy Award winning actress Lupita Nyong’o.
Afeni Shakur most likely had a major hand in the decision of casting Gurira as she is the executive producer of All Eyez On Me.
Casting directors were most recently looking for tough guys to work on a featured scene filming in Atlanta, Georgia.
