According to Nielsen, linear viewing of the series remained primarily steady this week with 2.474 million viewers compared to 2.536 million last week across four cable airings. However, when you include streaming on HBO Max and other HBO platforms, Variety confirmed that overall U.S. viewership for the series is up 5% from last week.
The fourth episode of the season, “King of the Narrow Sea,” aired Sunday night on HBO while NBC showed Week 1 of Sunday Night Football. The two programs will air simultaneously for the rest of Season 1. Additionally, “House of the Dragon” competes slightly for linear viewership with another show on its network: “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.” This competition has moved episode 4’s repeat airings to later timeslots.
The uptick in viewership this week is good news for Warner Bros. Discovery, as last week’s debut of Episode 3 saw a decrease in cable viewership over Labor Day Weekend. (Data regarding overall viewership for the episode, including the critical streaming contingent, was unavailable.) Therefore, it appears that the series is now retaining its viewers and bodes well for “House of the Dragon” and the “Game of Thrones” franchise overall.
Additionally, viewership of prior installments of “House of the Dragon” has continued to rise with delayed viewing via streaming. According to WBD’s chief financial officer Gunnar Wiedenfels, the pilot episode — which was already HBO’s most-viewed debut ever when it aired to 10 million viewers – has been seen by almost 30 million people since its premiere.
The critically acclaimed show “House of the Dragon” has already been renewed for a second season.
