Filmmaking drones are making it’s way into Hollywood’s film and TV industry
Drones are taking over Hollywood. After the FAA approved flight with a drone earlier this week, Hollywood studio executives are investing wholeheartedly in drones.
“It’s been overwhelming,” said Tony Carmean, partner and producer at Aerial MOB, which conducted the historic drone flight to shoot an Acura commercial. “Just in the last two weeks we’ve met with Sony, we’ve met with Warner Bros. – we’ve met with probably half of the major studios. The other studios are just a matter of arranging time.”
Drones are latest innovation in filmmaking. They provide a huge cost savings for productions that are interested in obtaining new and interesting camera angles for a fraction of the cost and risk of a helicopter camera operating team. Several companies in Hollywood are making a name for themselves in the drone filmmaking industry including Aerial MOB, Astraeus Aerial, Snaproll Media, Vortex Aerial, Pictorvision, HeliVideo Productions and Flying-Cam now have the right to use drones for films, TV and commercials on closed sets.
The day rate for a helicopter can range from $20,000 to $40,000 with crew. Operating a drone with crew can cut costs down to a rate that ranges between $9,000 to $15,000, according to The Wrap. “The possibility of making shots that you couldn’t do before is extremely exciting. A director and a director of photography can say I want this shot in a movie and we can get it without a helicopter,” said according to sources.
Here are a few angles that are now possible with drone filmmaking.
