Despite being the number one filming location for movies in the world, Georgia is planning on expanding their film industry.
According to reports, the newly created DeKalb County Film, Music & Digital Entertainment Commission is planning on expanding the county’s local entertainment industry.
The Dekalb Board of Commissioners voted 7-0 on Tuesday to spend $205,000 per year for the film commission, which will include one full-time and five part-time positions.
The commission will follow in the footsteps of the Atlanta and Savannah film commissions, according to Andrew Greenberg, the chairman of the commission’s advisory board.
“DeKalb has a lot to make it attractive to entertainment businesses. Unfortunately, most people here and elsewhere are unaware,” said Greenberg, who is also executive director of the Georgia Game Developers Association. “Atlanta and Savannah have done amazing jobs spreading the word about what they have to offer. Now it is DeKalb’s turn to do the same.”
There are currently three movie studios in DeKalb including Blackhall Studios, Third Rail Studios, and Eagle Rock Studios. Also, some of Hollywood’s biggest films are now shooting in DeKalb including Godzilla: King of Monsters and Dwayne Johnson’s Rampage.
The commission’s goals are to create more jobs in the entertainment industry, grow entertainment-related businesses and market the county to workers, residents, and visitors.
This news comes after a new studio found Georgia was the filming location for not only the most movies but the biggest movies in the world. As a result, Georgia’s movie industry is now bigger than Hollywood.
