Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming Echo series on Disney+
A spin-off series featuring industry newcomer Alaqua Cox, a Menominee deaf actor, was first rumored years before she debuted as Echo in Disney+’s Hawkeye in November 2021. After Hawkeye’s release, Marvel Studios formally announced that Maya Lopez, a deaf Indigenous vigilante, would be leading her series, Echo at Disney+ Day 2021.

Echo was introduced to the Marvel Universe in 1998’s Daredevil #9 by David Mack, Richard Isanove, Joe Quesada, and Jimmy Palmiotti, who called her Echo as a tribute to her slain father. She can feel the physical vibration of sound through the floor, allowing her to fight hand-to-hand. She is one of the most accomplished fighters in Marvel’s Multiverse. Maya may perfectly imitate another person’s fighting style simply by observing her opponent in battle, much like Taskmaster.
With the launch of Echo scheduled for next month, it appears to be an excellent opportunity to go through all the information a Marvel Cinematic Universe fan needs ahead of the upcoming series and how her Marvel Comics past connects to her MCU future.
Everything We Know So Far About The Film’s Plot
It’s reasonable to assume that Echo will follow Maya Lopez as she adapts to life after Hawkeye. The Disney+ series stayed pretty close to Lopez’s comic book history, with the sixth episode cliffhanger being a notable exception — and that means the tale of Cox’s Echo is just getting started. Maya hasn’t chosen the name “Echo” for herself, and she has yet to take on the mantle of her father’s heroic identity.
Wilson Fisk murders Maya Lopez’s father (a Kingpin enforcer) when she is a youngster in the comics, then promises to raise her. He convinces her that Daredevil (Charlie Cox in Netflix’s Daredevil and Spider-Man: No Way Home) is responsible for her father’s death as she grows up, eventually vowing to take him down. Essentially, he’s treating her how Wilson Fisk would treat a daughter, using thoughtful presents to get her to assist him with his nefarious plans and calling it love. So, much like Hawkeye, Echo begins as an antagonist and enforcer for Kingpin but evolves into something else. Bang bang! She shot down the Fisk-y… Or did she?
She falls in love with Daredevil in the comics after recognizing him as Abogados at Law. She doesn’t realize it’s him because he’s wearing his Abogados at Law disguise, but this is significantly different for the streaming series. Echo is a pseudonym she takes on during her relationship with Murdock Maya falls for Murdock in Echo but never meets him as Daredevil.
After the conclusion of Matt’s season and Maya’s journey with Clown, Marvel may choose to adopt this tale for their series.
Especially since Daredevil is such an essential figure in Echo becoming an Avenger in New Avengers #11 by Brian Bendis, Frank D’Armata, David Finch, and Danny Miki.
Marvel ECHO Cast:
Who Can We Expect to See?
Though Cox is returning as the title character, no other cast members have been specified. Although Marvel hasn’t confirmed it, Wilson Fisk/Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) will return for the series, and D’Onofrio himself wants to see his character return. He told Collider, “I think it would be great. I remember the comic run. It was one of my favorites, the father-daughter relationship between Maya and him, and I would love the opportunity to do that.”
Maya has previously crossed paths with Moon Knight in the comics, including as Kingpin’s companion. So fans may see a return of Maya’s character, or Steven Grant could appear in Echo when it debuts on the Disney+ streaming service. However, until there’s more information about casting, the best guess is that Kingpin will return.
In Daredevil #15, Maya confronts her phony father and blinds him with a gun before fleeing the country to deal with her trauma. It’s similar to Hawkeye, and Kingpin survives his wounds (however, he is ultimately imprisoned). Echo returns to New York and tries to reconnect with people from her past. When Maya’s father, Kingpin, learns that she has returned home, he tells her that he still loves her as a daughter but that she is no longer willing to play his games and goes on a soul-searching journey.
The Hand eventually has a new purpose in life due to Maya’s exploits. It is all sorts of tangled up in the comics. However, there is one character from Netflix’s Iron Fist who should return. If Jessica Henwick isn’t too preoccupied, it might be time to bring Colleen Wing out of retirement once again.
Expected Release Date
Echo does not have a set release date yet. On the other hand, Marvel recently received the necessary permits to shoot in Georgia in April and mid-May. If Marvel Studios continues on its current path, Echo will arrive in 2023.
Everything Else We Know
In 2021, Variety claimed that Etan Cohen (Men in Black 3, Holmes & Watson) and his wife, Emily Cohen, a Jewish Native-American comic book writer of An American Indian Guide to the Day of Atonement, would serve as writers and executive producers on Echo. However, the rest of the writing team was unknown at the time.
The Cohens are now officially credited as showrunners and executive producers on the series.
In January, who reported that Better Call Saul’s Marion Dayre (Better Call Saul) had joined the staff as a lead writer, and Shoshannah Stern (Supernatural) and Bobby Wilson (Reservation Dogs) would be working in the writers’ room.
Additionally, Ken Kristensen was hired as a writer for the show and wrote the first season’s tenth episode, “Virtue of the Victorious.”, “Trouble the Water,” the third episode, “Flustercluck,” the ninth episode.
As well as Dara Resnik another Netflix Marvel series writer in the writers’ room is Dara Resnik, who wrote the eighth episode of Daredevil season three.” Upstairs/Downstairs,” and co-wrote the third season’s eleventh episode, “Reunion.”
Given that the Marvel Comics history of Daredevil and Kingpin is closely linked to tales of both characters, including these writers in the Echo room for Season 1 might imply that these heroes will continue on the new Disney+ series.
