The action-comedy series is based on Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, and featured Michelle Yeoh, Ben Wang, Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Daniel Wu, Ke Huy Quan, Jim Liu, and Sydney Taylor, among its cast additions. (Cretton and Yeoh worked together on Marvel Movie.)

The Disney+ series focuses on Jin Wang, a typical high school student trying to balance his social life with his family. On the first day of school, when he encounters a new international student, more worlds collide as Jin is unwittingly caught up in an ancient Chinese mythological dispute. The action-packed coming-of-age story examines themes of identity, culture, and family.

Kelvin Yu, Melvin Mar, Jake Kasdan, Asher Goldstein, Erin O’Malley, and Gene Luen Yang serve as executive producers.

American Born Chinese, a show based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang, has received a series order from Disney+.

American Born Chinese will be directed and executive produced by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton, who also created the original concept for the series. Writers Kelvin Yu (Bob’s Burgers) and Charles Yu (Legion) are also executive producers.

The plot of American Born Chinese is about Jin Wang, a high school kid balancing his social life with his immigrant family life. When Jin encounters a new international student on the first day of class, he becomes involved in a fight between Chinese mythological gods. The program explores themes such as identity, culture, and family.

“Reading Kelvin’s riveting adaptation of Gene’s incredible novel had me laughing and crying and jumping out of my chair on every page,” said Cretton. “I feel deeply connected to the characters in this story and the brilliant team bringing it to life. This show will be unlike anything we’ve experienced on TV, and I can’t wait for the world to see what we’re cooking up.”

The Disney Branded Television series created by 20th Television is also produced by Melvin Mar (Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.), Jake Kasdan (Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.), Asher Goldstein (Short Term 12), and author Gene Leun Yang. Meanwhile, Kelvin Yu will run the show as a series showrunner.

Stay tuned for more as American Born Chinese continues to develop at Disney+.
