Suneeta Misra

Suneeta Misra is a writer, filmmaker and actor. Her play “Three Sisters” was staged in April of 2022 at the Jewish Community Theater in Rockville, Maryland and was produced by Natya Bharati, the premier South Asian Theater group in the DMV region. She written and directed several fictional and documentary films which have been shown at international film festivals. My films show the social conditions in both India, which is my native country, and in the South Asian diaspora of my adopted land, the United States. I have made a documentary film in India in 2011, on the educational challenges of dalit girls who come from the lowest strata of the Indian caste system. One of my narrative short films called “A Good Match” narrates the story of a first-generation South Asian woman who finds herself trapped in an abusive marriage. I have made a pilot for a proposed Indian TV series, “Sherlock Sai,” which focuses on a fictional South Asian American detective living in the Washington metro area who loves solving crimes as much as he loves following the spiritual practice of meditation and Yoga. The short film, “Picture Perfect,” completed in 2016 centers on an upwardly mobile South Asian American physician and his socialite wife who have achieved material success but are now facing challenges from their children. “Birds in Flight,” completed in July 2017, explored the problems faced by a middle-aged South Asian woman who is grappling with the effects of a debilitating illness. “Looking For Mr. Right,” completed in 2018, was funded by a grant from the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County (AHCMC). It explored the trials and tribulations of modern dating in the US South Asian community. My latest short film, “Crazy Bird Lady” completed in 2021 looks at issues of depression and loneliness during the current pandemic, within the South Asian immigrant community. It has been funded by AHCMC and the Puffin Foundation. Additional information about my previous work is included in the following sites.
