Unexpected Turn at the Weekend Box Office: Furiosa Loses out to Garfield and IF

Date:

Key Takeaways:

• Despite predictions, George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga suffered from a substantial drop in its second weekend, failing to defeat both The Garfield Movie and John Krasinski’s IF.
• Family audiences are flocking to The Garfield Movie, which may result in a domestic total of $100 million.
• John Krasinski’s IF is building momentum through word-of-mouth, with expectations it may surpass $110 million domestically.

Weekend Box Office Surprises as Furiosa Struggles

In a surprising turn of events, George Miller’s recent release Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has seen a bleak run at the box office. The film was expected to be overtaken by The Garfield Movie in its second weekend, but the unexpected success of John Krasinski’s IF further compounded the struggle. Preliminary box office figures released by Comscore reveal a close race among the three.

This weekend, The Garfield Movie managed to earn $14 million, swiftly outpacing IF which pulled in $10.8 million. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga trailed slightly behind with $10.75 million. The final figures might ultimately affect the positioning of the films, but the initial outlook for Furiosa seems dismal. Its second-week earnings took a hit of a significant 59% drop off, hindering the anticipation for a word-of-mouth success like its predecessor Mad Max: Fury Road.

Can The Garfield Movie Break $100 Million?

The Garfield Movie has retained a steady audience holding, reflecting only a 42% decline in its second week. If family audiences maintain this level of interest, the film could potentially reach a domestic total in the $100 million range.

John Krasinski’s IF: Overturned Predictions and Rising Popularity

This weekend’s biggest success story is John Krasinski’s IF, which managed to defy negative first-weekend reviews and low numbers, turning everything around with a commendable $80 million total to date. At this rate, the film is expected to easily surpass $110 million domestically by the end of its run.

Stable Performances from Other Films

Disney’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes held its ground with an $8.8 million weekend, bringing its domestic total to $139 million. Lesser known titles like The Fall Guy and Renny Harlin’s The Strangers Trilogy also displayed promising progress, with the possibility of breaching the $100 million and $30 million mark respectively. Another noticeable performer was Crunchyroll and Sony’s Haikyu! The Dumpster Battle earning an impressive $3.5 million over the weekend.

However, not all films enjoyed a stellar weekend. The critically acclaimed dramedy Ezra, despite its impressive cast, had a disappointing run earning $1.18 million over the weekend and averaging just $897 per theater. Similarly, Angel Studios’ Sight seems to be replicating Ezra’s trajectory, losing a significant portion of its audience and closing the weekend with just $1 million.

Outlook for Next Weekend

The box office is all geared up for the next high-energy release, Bad Boys: Ride Or Die, that is expected to infuse some adrenaline into the scene. As for Furiosa, it remains to be seen whether it can capitalize on Miller’s reputation and find its footing in the days ahead.

As a film enthusiast, let us know what you make of these unexpected recent box office performances, and which movie has your vote for the coming weekend?
