Behind-the-Scenes with Eric Litman

Litman offered a peek at the challenges involved in adapting the anime and manga’s iconic Straw Hat Crew for the live version. While describing the exhilaration of working on this project, he revealed some interesting facts, particularly about Mackenyu as Zoro. Mackenyu’s portrayal of Zoro was so impressive that the editor admitted it made him nearly forget about his favorite character.

Litman confessed he wasn’t a committed fan of the series before the project. However, he was acquainted with characters like Luffy and Zoro. Despite his fondness for Luffy, Mackenyu’s acting prowess left an indelible impression on him.

Mackenyu’s Portrayal of Zoro

Litman was vividly excited about episode 4, dedicated to Zoro. He explained, “I was so thrilled that I got to cut Zoro’s episode 4, where he explained who he was. Although Luffy is his favorite, however, Mackenyu is a terrific actor and I was so happy to be a part of this.” This shows Mackenyu’s performance was not only compelling but also crucial in maintaining the series’ authenticity for its diehard fans.

Transforming One Piece from Animation to Live Action

As with any adaptation, transporting the vibrant, imaginative world of One Piece from animation to live-action presented numerous challenges. However, Eiichiro Oda’s insightful understanding of the source material, coupled with his hands-on guidance, played a significant role in overcoming those challenges. This collaborative approach ensured a seamless transition for the series into the live-action realm.

Litman’s Transition from Marvel to One Piece

Prior to One Piece, Litman gained significant experience on genre projects, having worked as an editor on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Joining the One Piece crew, therefore, was not only exciting but also felt familiar to him.

Aware of the high expectations from an ardent fan base, Litman understood the immense responsibility on their team. Adapting a long-running, beloved series like One Piece was a daunting task, but this immense challenge also inspired Litman to strive for something extraordinary.

The Netflix series is available for binge-watching for all One Piece fans and newcomers alike. The monumental success of the series is a testament to the team’s hard work and the remarkable depiction of the characters, especially Mackenyu’s Zoro, which imbued the series with absolute authenticity.
