The premiere of the FX series, Shogun, has seen unprecedented success, largely attributable to its cast, including Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada. Anna Sawai’s devoted preparation for her challenging role as Lady Mariko has particularly earned her accolades and appreciation.

Shogun: The Long-Awaited Adaptation

Shogun is based on James Clavell’s critically acclaimed 1975 novel of the same name. Show creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks have expertly adapted the novel, despite spending almost a decade in production limbo. Set in 16th-century Japan, the series follows multiple plotlines converging into a gripping narrative of warring factions.

The Star Duo: Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada

Anna Sawai’s portrayal of Toda Mariko, Lady Mariko, is highly praised, marking her out as a standout performer. Lady Mariko, serving as an interpreter for Lord Yoshii Toranaga, works towards absolving her family name. Hiroyuki Sanada, besides portraying the formidable Lord Toranaga, has also served as the show’s producer, further aiding the success of the series.

Sawai’s Commendable Approach to Her Role

Sawai discussed her immersive preparation for her role in an interview with The A.V. Club. “To prepare for my role, I had to read books on Hosokawa Gracia, who inspired my character, Toda Mariko. I had to learn how to wear a kimono, walk in it, sit in, stand in it, how to open doors in it, and also write in a certain way. I had to basically learn everything [for the part],” she explained.

Her commitment and devotion to the character haven’t gone unnoticed. She confessed to being significantly impacted by the character, so much so that it changed her as an artist.

Why Choose Shogun?

In this faithful adaptation of Clavell’s novel, Sawai portrays the bilingual Mariko, helping John Blackthorne, stranded in Japan. Her character, based on the real-life story of Hosokawa Gracia, draws attention to the actress’s transformative performance.

Sawai’s role, she explained to Town & Country Magazine, appealed to her deeply, stating, “Reading Mariko’s story just really spoke to me so much, and I knew that she was the character that I needed to play.”

Looking Ahead

Shogun’s success is steadily rising, and with it, the recognition for Anna Sawai’s intense efforts and her impressive portrayal of Lady Mariko. There is increased hope for an Emmy nomination, given her outstanding performance in the series.

Shogun is currently streaming on Hulu and Disney+, providing audiences with an opportunity to experience the journey of its captivating characters. As the appeal of the show increases, it is expected that Sawai’s contribution as Lady Mariko will receive the recognition it deserves, thus highlighting her significant impact on this much-acclaimed show.
