Filmmaker Judd Apatow Gives Warning on Netflix’s New Business Model

Date:

Key Takeaways:

– Judd Apatow, the renowned director, has raised concerns about the current state of television and streaming platforms.
– Apatow believes excessive reruns are damaging the industry, turning it more into a business than art.
– Netflix and HBO are accused of being party to licensing agreements that give way to content recycling.
– Further, shows like ‘Insecure’ are licensed from Warner Bros. to Netflix, fueling Apatow’s fear of fewer new shows.
– Finally, Apatow believes the industry needs to be more innovative and take risks for a vibrant cinematic landscape.

Movie lovers have increasingly moved towards streaming platforms like Netflix, pushing traditional theaters into an existential crisis. Even movies like Barbie and Oppenheimer are forced to rally people to theaters to enjoy the thrill of cinema firsthand. Furthermore, revered director and producer, Judd Apatow, has recently expressed his worries about the current television industry and how the relentless recycling of shows due to licensing pacts is killing the art.

The Judd Apatow Perspective on the Streaming Model

Fans often find comfort in reruns of their favorite television series, be it The Office or Brooklyn Nine-Nine, to the extent of ignoring new storylines and characters. However, this culture of comfort viewing presents a dilemma for dynamic creators like Judd Apatow.

In a conversation with Vulture, Apatow confessed that while he appreciates reruns personally, he is apprehensive about the likelihood of streaming platforms sticking to recycling old content and buying shows off each other all the time. He gave the example of Netflix and HBO – two industry leaders, where he stated that it’s scary to see streamers realizing that instead of spending huge amounts on new shows, they can just bring back old ones, thereby restricting the creation of fresh content.

The Licensing Concern: Recycling and Repurchasing Content

Apatow’s concerns are not without reasoning. Over the past year, Warner Bros. Discovery has licensed several of its shows to Netflix, including HBO originals like Insecure. Following suit, Six Feet Under, True Blood, The Pacific, and others were also made available to Netflix along with an exclusive deal to stream the cult favorite, Sex and the City, expected to start in April this year. Clearly, Apatow’s anxieties about streaming and recycling old content rather than launching new series are not completely unfounded.

The Need for Risk-Taking and Innovation

According to Apatow, the entertainment industry often chooses to repeatedly milk a successful formula until it exhausts the audience’s interest. Citing the example of The Hangover, Apatow condemned this approach, emphasizing that success follows risk-taking.

He went on to commend Oppenheimer’s bold step of telling the story of the father of the atomic bomb, emphasizing the need for such bravery across the industry. He expressed his belief that viewers desire a unique and challenging cinematic experience that goes beyond standard comedy plots.

Apatow’s argument is sound; the film industry needs to step up their game, especially in the comedy genre, curating content that would compel viewers to leave the comfort of their homes and enjoy the cinema in the company of others. Whether the turn of events will follow Apatow’s vision is something only time can tell.

Thus, as online streaming platforms continue to redefine viewership, it’s important for film and TV creators to heed the likes of Judd Apatow and ensure the survival of the cinematic art form amid changing consumption patterns.
